Just one week ago today, we were right in the middle of the biggest season in the party calendar, with clowns, unicorns and Harley Quinns at every turn. But how did Halloween really shape up for the independent retailer?
“I’ve not had a chance to speak to anyone else in the industry yet to find out how it was. Some have said great, others have said terrible, from what the suppliers have told me, but not heard from any retailers,” said Dan Parsons, director of Reading’s famous Fun ‘n’ Frolic party store.
“For us, Halloween was not great and not terrible,” he continued. “The season was not quite what we had hoped for, but at the same time it was not a disaster. We sold more props and decorations this year, but sales were nothing to shout about. Footfall was down, but average spend was up. In that respect it was disappointing, but we always try to stay positive!”
Dan also has his doubts that supermarkets took the level of business they may have been expecting. “I noticed that the three major supermarkets near us were doing a 50% sale on Halloween stock on the 31st and they had tonnes of stock and rails upon rails of costumes left,” he said. “So I’m not really sure who has the bragging rights on costume sales this year… maybe the web?”
“Suppliers have been having sales, discounts and incentives all through Halloween,” added Dan, “so this makes me think they are maybe sitting on stock too. Here’s to a great Christmas and new year!”
