Possible amendments are first success for EBPC campaign

The first campaign success from the European Balloon and Party Council (EBPC) could see balloons and balloon sticks being removed from the proposed EU directive on single-use plastics (SUPs).

As part of its ongoing campaign, the EBPC has successfully managed to see more than one European political group tabling amendments in favour of removing balloons and sticks from the proposed directive.

“Although this first phase has been a success, there is no guarantee of success for the remainder of the campaign and there is still work to do,” said director general Suteesh Chumber.

The next signficant steps within the campaign include:

  • The ENVI MEP’s will vote on the amendments, consolidating the final position of the ENVI at Parliament. This will take place on 10 October, 2018. Following this, all MEPs will vote to create an overall position in Parliament.
  • EBPC will reach out to as many Environmental ministries as possible to inform them of the current position. Ministries are in the process of making their positions now.

Shadow MEPs met earlier this week to discuss ongoing compromise amendments, added Suteesh. “We understand sticks were discussed in alot of detail and there is currently some discussion about separating the stick from the valve/cup,” he said. “From our understanding, balloons also have also favourably been discussed.”

The upcoming vote is a critical phase in the SUP project and industry suppliers, buyers and retailers are encouraged to help ensure ENVI MEPs provide ongoing support.
