The NCA 1,000 Mask Challenge launches across the US

America’s only professional costumers’ organisation The National Costumers Association (NCA) has called on US costume makers to come together to help make 1,000 masks for frontline healthcare workers across the United States.

The call to arms came from executive director Ed Avis at the end of last week, when he spoke during an industry webinar which was for costume professionals concerned about the financial, employment and safety issues posed by the crisis. It also covered topics ranging from how to best disinfect costumes to keeping cash flowing during the crisis.

Shops and manufacturers with sewing equipment, materials and a little spare time are being asked to put those resources to good use as the NCA sponsors an effort to make and donate 1,000 masks for medical personnel across the country.

The NCA 1,000 Mask Challenge hopes that many of the excellent sewers in the professional costume industry will be able to put their skills to good use in making these much-needed masks.

“Every bit of effort you can contribute will help,” said Ed. “The demand for hospital masks is far outstripping supply and we can make a difference!”
