Novelty costume company Rasta Imposta has embraced ‘Philly pride’ by producing a costume based on footballer Jason Kelce’s Super Bowl parade outfit.
It started earlier this year, when Jason – who plays for the Philadelphia Eagles – made a speech at the famous parade wearing an elaborate and colourful costume.
The outfit quickly sparked a number of home-made imitations and Eagles fans of all ages have appeared in the signature green, gold and pink costume.
In September, New Jersey company Rasta Imposta collaborated with Jason May Costumes to bring the outfit directly to enthusiastic Eagles fans.
“Since August, when we started shipping, the parade costume has been everywhere,” said Gary Schneider, general manager of marketing at Rasta Imposta. “People will wear it to weddings, to fantasy football drafts – it’s really become an iconic piece of the city.”
The costume is still available on the Rasta Imposta website.
Another Philadelphia legend was introduced at the end of September – furry orange monster Gritty is the official team mascot for the hockey team the Philadelphia Flyers. Dozens of Gritty-inspired costumes were seen throughout Halloween.
Rasta Imposta has neither confirmed nor denied that it is working on an official version of the costume.
“We’re in touch with the Flyers, and they know we’re interested,” said Gary. “It depends on what customers want. We as fans need to let Gritty grow.”
In the meantime, determined fans are continuing to produce their own designs.
