Balloon World Record Attempt Calls On 50 Artists

A world record attempt will be taking place in Singapore next month (March 2018) when world-renowned balloon artist and current world record holder Lily Tan gathers together 50 balloon artists from 12 countries as part of her latest record attempt.

Queensland balloon artist Matt Russell is one of the lucky few to have been invited to join the world-record attempt, which will use more than 500,000 balloons to create an as-yet-undisclosed artwork.

The four-day project will be taking place under the creative guidance of Tan Lily, although the theme will be kept under wraps until the big day itself.

“I am pretty chuffed to be invited to be involved,” Matt says. “It’s not something Australia has ever seen before, so it’s exciting to have the chance to travel and be part of the experience.”

Fellow balloon artist Maureen Egan from Sydney has also been invited.

Matt has previously won four awards at the Qualatex World Balloon Convention and continues to learn new skills and techniques from others around the world.

“It’s given me a lot of opportunities in life that I would never have had,” he adds. “I’ve got some amazing friends from all over the world. Without balloons I would never have had those opportunities.”

Lily Tan already holds a Guinness World Record for the largest 3D balloon sculpture, created in Singapore in March 2012. The sculpture (pictured) used 79,854 balloons and took 42 hours to create.
