Retail sales rise in May

The Office for National Statistics has reported that sales volumes grew by 0.3% in May, boosted by warm weather and bank holidays.

The increase was better than expected by analysts, but slightly less than the 0.5% growth in April.

The increase is said to be due to continued good weather, the King’s Coronation and the three bank holidays in the month.

Senior statistician for the ONS, Heather Bovill, said: “Retail sales grew a little in May, with online shops doing particularly well selling outdoor goods and summer clothes as the sun began to shine.”

Non-store sales grew by 2.7%, but food sales were down 0.5%, showing that consumers may be cutting back amidst inflation.
