Retail Feedback: 2018 so far

The end of the summer is the perfect time to take stock of the first half of the year before everyone goes Halloween crazy. PPE spoke to Paula Ardron-Gemmell at Pink Tree Parties to find out how the party business has been so far in 2018.

How has business been for you in the first six months of 2018, in general?

“Last year was one of positivity for us as we saw a 21% increase in turnover. The party industry continues to grow, with people spending more than ever per event and although footfall on the high street is dropping noticeably, social media orders and corporate enquiries have risen to compensate.”

Do you think that the last six months have been a fair representation of the state of the party industry at the moment?

“The party industry continues to grow with more people spending more than ever per event. The internet sales have died to minimal levels with the increase of people online selling knock-off imports cheaper than we can buy them for, but we just adapt.”

Have you seen any particular crazes or fashions this year?

“Speciality balloons such as Bubbles, aquas, giant 3ft balloons and personalised products are all doing well – customers are steering away from single printed foils and looking for the wow factor. With the accessibility of DIY basic balloons and budget card shops selling basics, people don’t want to be thought of as cheap!”

Have you made any significant business changes this year?

“We are celebrating our tenth year in business this year and have a new website near completion. We are also closing the shop in August for a week for a new facelift, making it totally up to date and beautiful! We have also developed our training side of the business with the help and guidance of NABAS and we’re instructing more people in not only the basics or balloons and business, but also in the more advanced techniques such as correctly using deco bubbles and aqua balloons, along with silhouette cameo printing.”

What’s the most exciting thing that has happened to your business this year?

“The highlight of our year so far was going to Barcelona for CEBA 2018 in March to experience the amazing talents of our European balloon professionals – it was so inspiring. We have also developed our training side of the business with the help and guidance of NABAS and we’re instructing more people in both the basics and the more advanced techniques.”

Is there a particular product, range or supplier that has has really made a difference to your business in 2018?

“I have to give a shout out to GO International for getting both tissue and metallic confetti made and imported for me as well as a number of other items. My bubble balloons are now flying as a result of having exactly what I need! I can honestly say that without that support the last 12 months wouldn’t have seen such a growth in our business.”

How do you expect the rest of 2018 to be for your business?

“We expect sales to continue to be up for the rest of 2018 with all the new product coming out and keeping ahead of the competition and trends. This year has shown me how believing in your business, focusing on success and being surrounded by like-minded business people can revolutionise your company.”

Is there anything else you’d like to mention?

“This year has shown me how believing in your business, focusing on success and being surrounded by like-minded business people can revolutionise your company. Investing in new products and training is a must no matter what level you are at. The support and interactions of NABAS  have helped immensely and although I can see our industry splintering in ways I never imagined, I can also see a huge potential in the abilities of those truly wishing to succeed. Helping other professionals achieving their goals is something that has delighted me and brought me so much pleasure these past 12 months, I’m excited about the future.”
