The list of most popular Instagram posts – which was complied by a dedicated team of researchers at Halloween Express – makes for interesting reading in a world where one of the main motivations behind figuring out a great Halloween costume is to get as many likes on social media as possible.

Topping the list for 2017 (so far) is the not-so-scary fairy, which has been attracting an average of 4,073 likes per post. It’s way out in front, which suggests that a few celebrity posts may have skewed the data slightly, but is a great suggestion for anyone who wants to keep it classic this Halloween.

The next most popular costume – which garners an average of 1,848 likes per post – embraces the spooky, frightful nature of Halloween with Pennywise, the clown from IT. Clowns in general appear a little further down the list, with an average of 486 likes per post, highlighting the importance of following current trends.

Other frightening classics like fellow movie character Freddy Krueger (872) or a timeless zombie (830)  are next in line, followed by iconic looks including cats (753), Ghostface from the Scream franchise (643) and even Harley Quinn (631).

Using the Instagram API, Halloween Express collected this information by looking at every post tagged #halloween (from 2012 to 2017) and searched the captions for mentions of almost 500 costumes.
