Horror leads the way at Yvonne’s Fancy Dress

Dundee-based fancy dress and costume shop Yvonne’s Fancy Dress has revealed the shop’s biggest sellers in the run-up to October 31 in an interview with the local newspaper.

Owner David Farry said that consumers have been opting for more traditionally ‘scary’ costumes this year, following several years of less typical outfits.

“There’s been a big push on well-known characters like Slenderman – a child-snatching monster dreamt up on internet message boards – along with killer clowns like Pennywise from the remake of It,” he said, highlighting the trend for clothes that embrace the scary spirit.

“With the new Halloween film out there’s also been a big demand for costumes of Michael Myers,” he continued. “We still do a lot of ‘generic’ costumes but people like to make them scary. People are buying costumes of Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and Little Red Riding Hood and adding blood and cuts.”

David added: “It’s usually the kids more than the adults who want to add gore, blood and guts. Even little girls and boys. It used to be that people wanted to dress up as less scary things at Halloween but that tide has turned again. Superhero characters like Deadpool and Harley Quinn from Suicide Square are still very popular but there’s a lot more demand for horror.”
