Harry Potter leads World Book Day for Argos

Harry Potter was the most popular character for this year’s World Book Day at Argos, the retailer has revealed, with costumes associated with the bestselling book and film franchise accounting for almost 25% of the retailer’s costume sales.

The popular character was the biggest selling costume for 2018, accounting for nearly a quarter of total costume sales over the World Book Day period and topping the list more than 20 years after the first book was published.

The top ten character costumes were:

  1. Harry Potter
  2. Gruffalo
  3. Spider-man
  4. Superman
  5. Willy Wonka
  6. Star Wars Stormtrooper
  7. Where’s Wally?
  8. Star Wars Darth Vader
  9. Batman
  10. Princess Sleeping Beauty

“It is great to see the magic of Harry Potter still going strong after 20 years, closely followed by comic book heroes Superman and Spider-man,” said Kristina Hunt, clothing buyer at Argos.

“2018 has been a bit of a retro year with Willy Wonka and Where’s Wally? sticking firmly in the top ten.”
