Harlequin Fancy Dress Shop to close

The independent retailer in Hornchurch will close its doors in July following three decades in business.

Harlequin Fancy Dress Shop is due to close on 20 July as the landlord is claiming its property back due to a proposed rent increase being unaffordable.

The shop has been open for over 30 years, run by owner Gill Goodchild. Gill told Romford Recorder: “I had known for about a year, but I’ve been trying to sell it [the business] on as a growing concern, but no-one really wanted it, so I have to go.

“When you’ve got to a point where you really can’t afford to compete any more, you really have to take drastic action. I’d love to stay here, but it’s finding somewhere which is affordable.”

The business will continue to trade online via its website.
