“Customers are still willing to spend on products that excite them”; talking to Emma Angel

Whatever you might think of 2018, there is no doubt that it was an challenging year and the last 12 months have certainly kept the retail industry on its toes. Here’s what Emma Angel, director of Angels Fancy Dress had to say about the last year in party.

How do you think the party industry has fared over the last 12 months?

“It has fared reasonably well. Whilst it inevitably faces some of the same challenges as the broader retail industry, customers are still willing to spend on products that excite them and that will look great in those all important photos to post on social media.”

What was your business highlight of 2018 and why?

“Our websites have continued to enjoy year-on-year growth, even in these testing times.”

What are your hopes and expectations for the party market in general next year?

“We would expect that people will still want to let their hair down and use parties as a means of escape of the real world. Celebrations to mark life events and milestones have been around since time began and show no signs of stopping.”

What would you choose as the best new party product of 2018 and why?

“I would choose costumes that tap into everyday popular culture as they are great for social media posts. Rasta Imposta’s Avocado Toast costume fits this bill perfectly.”

Will you be attending any of the trade shows in the first months of 2019?

“I shall be attending the Halloween & Party Expo in New Orleans as it’s a great way of picking up emerging trends. From 31 March to 2 April, we’ll be hosting our annual Open Days where we’ll be showcasing our new lines and classic ranges from Rasta Imposta, InCharacter and Tinsley Transfers. We’re also being joined by some amazing exhibitors, including Palmers Agencies, Bristol Novelty, Fun Shack, Leg Avenue, Morph Costumes and OppoSuits.”

Can you reveal any of your plans for 2019?

“We’re working hard behind the scenes on a variety of things so watch this space!”

And finally…. can you sum up the current state of the party industry in three words?

“Resilient, irreverent, fun.”
