Cambridge costume hire shop, Wardrobe, is preparing to close its doors as owner, Leslie Symondson retires.
Leslie set up the shop with husband John in 1984, supplying historical, show business and animal outfits for plays, pantos and fancy dress parties.
Leslie told BBC News: “It’s the end of an era, but we’ve got lots of memories and lots of funny stories.
“It was a golden opportunity. When we opened, trade was quite bust because there was nobody else.”
In a Facebook post, the owner said: “After 40 years of laughter and fun, Wardrobe Costume shop is closing, John and Leslie are retiring. Our fabric, haberdashery, wigs, accessories, face paints, masks, hats are all reduced, there’s even the chance to buy your favourite costume. Pop in and see us before we go, we’d love to see you. Thank you all, schools, theatre groups and our wonderful public for all the best times and support.”
Leslie said she would be interested in any offers to buy the business as a going concern as she prepares to retire. She aims to close the shop at the end of January and has around 2,000 costumes up for sale.
