Fancy Dress Castle is a popular costume and party shop based in Watford high street. Owner Chis Mee talks us through what has been selling well in recent weeks.
Adult Costumes; 80s, licensed (Smiffys, Rubie’s)
“The 80s have been big this month thanks to a big local Club Tropicana event. It is mostly accessories rather than full costumes and people usually go for either the neon range or a wig to dress up as a character like Madonna. For film and television characters the most common requests have been for Thor and Loki and Mr Incredible. Mostly people come in with a theme and we work with them to find something.”
Children’s Costumes; Historical costumes (Smiffys)
“There’s been no real trend with children’s costumes this month but the schools have been doing the usual Romans, Greeks and Egyptians so we’ve been selling lots of those.”
Balloons; Confetti balloons, large numbers and letters, gender reveal (Qualatex, Amscan)
“Thanks to Instagram more people are choosing balloons that make a statement, so we’re seeing lots of confetti balloons, lots of personalisation and giant numbers. Rose gold is still a big seller. Gender reveal of course is still doing well and we have sold a lot of Qualatex as well as nice Orbz by Amscan.”
Tableware; Rose gold (Unique Party)
“We’re still seeing a lot of rose gold themes. There seems to be no trend at all on kids partyware, most customers just browse the range and choose their favourite!”
Anything Else? Union Jack-themed leis, tableware and hats, royal family masks (Amscan, Rubie’s, Mask-arade)
“The biggest seller by far has been the Hawaiian-style Leis in red, white and blue. People also had lots of Royal Wedding parties with the full tableware kits, bunting and flags from Amscan. Harry and Meghan Mask-arade masks sold well, as did bowler hats and felt hats.”
