Benidorm holds annual ‘Brit’ fancy dress day

The annual ‘Brit’ fancy dress day took place in the Spanish resort of Benidorm yesterday, Thursday 14 November, with an estimated 35,000 visitors embracing the opportunity to wear ‘bad taste’ costumes.

The unofficial British fancy dress party – where ‘bad taste’ costumes are encouraged – is traditionally held the day after the final Benidorm fiestas have finished.

One of the biggest tourist highlights of the year, holidaymakers and ex pats join in with the fun, dressing up in a wide variety of costumes, with many themed group and couples costumes.

As always, the police were in attendance throughout in case there were any issues with the costumes, which included people dressed as Golliwogs, religious themes and with explicitly sexual references.

This tradition started over 20 years ago when a free drink was offered to anyone who dressed up. The event has grown organically from there, with a full-scale parade now also taking place.
