Viewers were upset recently after the BBC aired a balloon release stunt on The One Show shortly after it aired a plastic recycling appeal.
The BBC has apologised after making another balloon gaffe, just weeks after it came under fire for showing a balloon release in an episode of Eastenders.
The most recent balloon release came just minutes after a segment in which people were urged to recycle. The pre-recorded report, which showed pop group Take That and the cast of their musical The Band releasing hundreds of balloons and confetti cannons, followed an item about plastic pollution.
Viewers immediately took to social media to accuse the show of ‘setting a bad example’.
The One Show responded, saying on Twitter;
“In response to audience concerns about the release of balloons during a Take That performance yesterday. The Band @TheBandMusical has said the below. The clip was supplied to the One Show and other media to promote the new musical. It wasn’t arranged by or filmed by The One Show.”
The cast of The Band said sorry for the stunt on Twitter.
They admitted: “We had not thought this thru in terms of the environment and apologise profusely.”
A BBC spokesman later added: “The One Show team is very aware of the impact such activities can have on the environment. The event was organised, filmed and distributed to the media by the team behind the musical The Band. The One Show takes the effects on the environment very seriously.”
Viewers were not placated and have called for The One Show to take responsibility and to run a feature on ‘balloon litter’ in the future.
