New England-based balloon artist Dan Staples is making plans to set the Guinness World Record for largest freestanding solo balloon sculpture this week.
Dan is currently hard at work at the Patriots Hall of Fame at Patriot Place, weaving together thousands of red, white and blue balloons to recreate The New England Patriots logo.
The logo will need to be 80 feet tall and 100 feet wide once it is completed, when an official judge from GWR will arrive to measure the sculpture. This particular record means that Dan must be the only one working on the sculpture, meaning that all of the inflating, tying, and sculpting has to be done unassisted.
Dan has been outlining and planning the complex design for the balloon logo – which has to be freestanding and can only be supported by other balloons – for months and estimates that it will take him around 45 hours to complete.
Although Dan is confident that his sculpture will meet the necessary dimensions to break the current record, he said there are always concerns about technicalities.
“You have to follow everything just right,” he said. “After the judges come on Friday it’ll take six to eight weeks to decide if I actually have the record. If the judges don’t like something I did, we don’t get it.”
