Pubs ban Christmas jumpers and fancy dress

Christmas jumpers and fancy dress have all been banned from three Hull pubs as part of a wider attempt to stop drunken groups from disrupting others’ evenings.

This year’s ban spans three different pubs, all owned by landlords Alan Murphy and Chrissy Fleming, who took the decision to introduce the ban several years ago after watching people on festive bar crawls annoying other visitors.

This year’s ban goes even further and has been brought forward to start at the earlier time of 7pm – rather than the previous 8pm deadline.

The Christmas jumper rule has returned this year, and no one is allowed in the quartet of Old Town pubs after 7pm wearing a festive woolly.

“We have the rule in place again this year,” said Ms Fleming. “This year we have put it back to 7pm because groups of people in Christmas jumpers were coming in just before the cutoff so we wanted to change it round a bit.”

“A lot of fellow publicans contacted me from around the country telling me it was a great idea,” Alan added. “There is something about dressing up which makes people act differently.”

“They often set tasks for each other such as everyone taking something from a pub. I have seen people take away bar stools before.”

Customers are still welcome to wear festive outfits during the day.
