HalloweenCostumes.com reveals state of ‘Halloween in America’ for 2019

With October just three months away, interest in Halloween is rising and so HalloweenCostumes.com, the largest online-only retailer of Halloween costumes, has officially released the results of its 2019 ‘Halloween in America’ survey.

Conducting the survey on behalf of HalloweenCostumes.com, Google surveys spoke to 2,012 respondents in June 2019 to find out how the US celebrates the spooky holiday.

Three-quarters (75%) of all adults surveyed generally spend around $0-49 on Halloween costumes each year. Of the remaining quarter, 15% spent between $50-99 (15%), 5% spent between $100-199 (5%), just 1% spent between $200-499 (1%) and an impressive 4% really push the boat out and spend more than $500.

It’s a fairly similar story for Halloween decorations as well, with 76% of adults spending around $0-49 on Halloween decorations, 13% between $50-99, 5% between $100-199, 1% between $200-499 and 5% spending $500 and over.

Nearly 40% of adults surveyed said they will only wear a costume once, with one in five (20%) reusing it once and roughly the same (19%) using it three or more times.

Respondants to the survey also identified some areas where they believed there was a gap in the market for Halloween costumes. Over half of adults surveyed said there are not enough age-appropriate costumes for girls between the ages of 10 and 13, while nearly 70% believe there are not enough plus-size costume options available.

“We focus on full-family offerings, as well as having costumes for every size,” said Tom Fallenstein, ceo of HalloweenCostumes.com, in response to the findings. “We have 300% more plus-size costumes than our top competitor, with over 900 styles to choose from, and carry sizes up to 8x.”

“Age-appropriate costumes have also been a real focus over the last few years,” added Tom. “For our girls’ costumes, we are offering more pant options as well as making sure that classic costumes which are usually targeted towards boys (such as police officers, knights, astronauts and firefighters), are available in girls’ versions as well.”
