German town latest to take on Smurf World Record with 2,762 participants

Lauchringen in Southern Germany is the latest town to attempt to break the official world record for the number of people dressed as Smurfs in one place, with almost 3,000 people joining in.

In order to be counted, participants could dress as either Papa Smurf — with his trademark red cap and a white beard — a regular Smurf or Smurfette, with blonde hair and a white skirt or dress. All skin showing had to be painted blue or the person was not counted.

The crowd gathered on Saturday 16 February to attempt to break the world record for the most people dressed as Smurfs in one place. Donning blue body paint and cartoonish outfits, the group knocked the record out of the park.

The attempt is expected to be approved by Guinness World Records in the coming weeks. The record was previously set in 2009 at a club night in Swansea, UK. Organised by online fancy dress retailer Jokers’ Masquerade, the event has held the title for the last ten years, with 2,510 Smurfs.
