Benidorm holds annual ‘Brit’ fancy dress day

The annual ‘Brit’ fancy dress day took place in the Spanish resort of Benidorm yesterday, Thursday 15 November, with visitors making the most of the opportunity to embrace ‘bad taste’ costumes.

The unofficial British fancy dress party – also known as the ‘bad taste’ costume party – is held the day after the final Benidorm fiestas have finished.

One of the biggest tourist highlights of the year, holidaymakers and ex pats go to great efforts to join in with the fun, dressing up in offensive costumes and outfits which would often be the subject of much negative attention elsewhere.

The police were in attendance throughout in case there were any issues with the costumes, which included people in blackface, religious themes and explicitly sexual accessories.

Last year it was estimated that around 30,000 people attended the celebration and although figures have not yet been released for this year, they were estimated to be in the tens of thousands.

This tradition started over 20 years ago when a free drink was offered to anyone who dressed up and it has grown organically from there, with a full-scale parade now taking place as well.
