Runners Told To Reconsider Fancy Dress

London marathon runners have been warned to reconsider their fancy dress costumes ahead of the world-famous race this weekend as organisers are concerned the heatwave could cause problems for participants.

Temperatures have been predicted to rise as high as 23C for the annual event in the capital on Sunday 22 April, a dramatic change for the runners who have been training in the wind and rain in recent weeks.

Fancy-dress runners are expected to struggle more than most, given the additional strain put on the body by the weight and heat of many of the costumes. Many runners are expected to be looking for last-minute alternatives to heavier, more cumbersome costumes.

“If runners were planning to run in fancy dress, they should think carefully if that is appropriate in the forecast conditions,” said marathon director Hugh Brasher.

More than 100 runners are competing for Guinness World Records at the event, including people who will dress in a suit of armour, as Paddington Bear and in ski boots.
