Hope For Future Of Pirate Festival

Public donations have been flooding in to save Brixham Pirate Festival, one of Devon’s biggest and most popular family events, which sees hundreds of people attending in pirate-themed fancy dress.

The event had been cancelled because of a lack of funding, after organisers were unable to find the £32,000 needed to run the event across the May Day Bank Holiday weekend.

Despite pledges of thousands of pounds, it is not yet clear whether the team behind the festival will have raised enough to continue for another year, having spent the last few months trying to raise funds via grants, sponsorship, crowdfunding and fundraising.

Festival organiser Peter Berresford says that, while thrilled with the response, they are not out of the woods yet.

“Brixham Council is to consider our application for funding in February,” he commented. “That, the £1,000 donations and the GoFundMe response would help us. We are not there yet, the pressure is still on but there is land in sight for our glorious festival!”

“Your messages of support and love have re-ignited our spirits which were bruised and beaten from these past few months of trying to get this festival to go ahead, and we thank you all.”

A final decision will be made in the coming weeks.

The GoFundme page has raised some £4,835 at the time of going to press. To donate go to https://www.gofundme.com/brixhampirates
