Hong Kong balloon artist breaks world record

The 42 metre dragon sculpture created by Wilson Pang Sze-Tai has been awarded the largest balloon sculpture of a dragon.

The 41.77 metre sculpture was created with 38,000 hand-tied balloons and was installed in the TMTPlaza, a shopping mall in Hong Kong’s Tuen Mun area. The dragon has broken the Guinness World Record for the ‘largest balloon sculpture of a dragon’.

Wilson said: “It was fulfilling to bring home a Western marker of success using the traditional Chinese symbol of a dragon. I wanted to show the world that Hong Kong has kept its cultural elements intact.”

Wilson is a two-time winner of the World Balloon Convention, winning in 2016 and 2018, and also has a place in the Asia Book of Records for the ‘biggest balloon Christmas wreath’.

The dragon was designed using AI and projector screen to create a dragon ‘that looked majestic but still approachable’. The build took him and a team of 60 volunteers three and a half days to finish.
