MorphCostumes features on BBC News

In a feature about the growth of Halloween, with the UK market predicted to be worth £1 billion this year, MorphCostumes’ Gregor Lawson talked about the company’s success this year.

When discussing the growth of Halloween over recent years, co-founder of MorphCostumes, Gregor Lawson, explained: “It’s been pretty steady the past few years, excluding the pandemic. This year, we think that it will be a bit closer to flat, due to the greater pressure on spending, but the market, we believe, is pretty resilient, because it’s important to kids and adults alike, and when you compare it to other options of how you have fun, it’s pretty easy and cheap to do.”

Talking about the cost-of-living crisis, Gregor explained how despite pressures, MorphCostumes has grown this year: “We’re going to hit £40 million turnover this year, last year was £33 million. So we’ve grown, but I think the broader picture of Halloween has been that it’s been flat across the world. In the UK it may be slightly up, but the cost-of-living certainly is having an impact.”

On the subject of Amazon, Gregor said: “We do a lot of our business in the UK through Amazon and we find it very powerful. The fulfilment services that it offers has allowed us to drop in our range and scale very quickly. Not just in the UK, but Amazon all over the world.”

Talking about trends for Halloween this year, Gregor told BBC News: “A lot of that is driven by what consumers see in Hollywood movies, so Barbie and Wednesday were great, but we also see that a lot of the evergreen characters – skeletons, witches and such – are a huge part of the market each year.”
