Google’s Frightgeist reveals 2018 Halloween trends

Global search engine Google has released the 2018 version of its Frightgeist tool, for the second year running, with Fortnite and Spider-Man coming top of the dress-up pops.

The findings from GoogleTrends reveal the top US Halloween trends in real time, reflecting the most popular searches across America as people turn to Google for inspiration.

While many Halloween celebrations have already taken place, the holiday is notorious for last-minute shoppers and retailers can expect to see customers coming in for costumes right up until the weekend.

In revealing 2018’s most-searched-for Halloween costumes in the US, Google Trends has identified this year’s most popular Halloween costume in the US (Fortnite), but also breaks the information down locally, state by state.

Tracking the best costumes with up-to-the-minute search results, the Google Frightgeist tool can display this data in several ways – by top trending costumes, state-by-state or via a Costume Map which lets you see which outfits are trending where.

The top ten trending costumes, nationally, are currently:

  • Fortnite (new entry)
  • Spider-Man (new entry)
  • Unicorn (+1)
  • Dinosaur (+6)
  • Witch (+1)
  • Harley Quinn (-4)
  • Superhero (new entry)
  • Pirate (-)
  • Rabbit  (-4)
  • Princess (new entry)

Google has also bought back the Costume Wizard, which helps consumers pick an outfit based on a variety of factors including spookiness level and style.
