A Halloween Brexit: trick or treat?

European Union leaders granted the UK a six-month extension to the official Brexit deadline, following late-night talks in Brussels. The new deadline falls on Halloween, making it easy pickings for parties.

While the ongoing Brexit saga might be driving everyone mad (and for those of you reading this from overseas; we’re sorry!), there’s no doubt that the new date set for Britain to leave the EU has made it almost certain that Brexit-related fancy dress will be one of the leading Halloween party themes for 2019.

In much the same way as Donald Trump masks were a bestseller in previous years, it’s likely that Teresa May, Nigel Farage and Donald Tusk costumes will be out in full force for this year’s celebrations.

Following the original referendum, Brexit was a fairly niche choice of costume for Halloween 2016, but the new deadline date is likely to see a surge of interest in party-goers dressing up as either one of the main  political players in the event or as the concept of Brexit itself.

In fact, Brexit-themed masks have already been a hit for Mask-arade, as design and marketing manager Joe Alsop explains: “Brexiteer masks have been selling well for some time now – it seems that prolonged uncertainty for the economy spells prolonged sales of Brexit-themed face masks! May, Corbyn, Farage, Rees-Mogg, Gove, BoJo and other EU leaders have been growing in popularity (in mask terms, at least) so we think it’s definitely set to be a surprise theme for Halloween 2019.”
