Balloon lady plays love interest in Ed Sheeran video

A balloon lady takes centre stage in one of YouTube’s most popular videos as she plays the interest in Ed Sheeran’s latest music video, for his current single, Happier.

The video – which is being hailed as both genius and insane – features a puppet version of Ed losing his balloon-based girlfriend to another puppet. The story then takes us through a number of flashbacks, showing how happy the couple once were.

Puppet Ed then drowns his sorrows in a bar which is made entirely of twisted balloons, right down to the beer pumps. Meanwhile, balloon girlfriend is left to float away as the new man in her life is unable to keep a tight enough hold on her string. (There’s a metaphor in there somewhere.)

The bar was created by California-based Nifty Balloons’ Shana and David Brenion – along with Darren Saari from Twiist Balloons –  using Qualatex balloons.

“This Ed Sheeran music video is definitely our highest-profile balloon project to date,” said Shana, in a post on the Qualatex facebook page, adding that; “the director loved the Chrome details!”

“It’s a heartbreaking song,” she continued, “but the director’s choice to use puppets and balloons was brilliant. Two full days on the Fox Studios lot for mere minutes of screen time, but I’d say it was worth it, wouldn’t you?”

The official video has now been viewed on YouTube over 20 million times in the last four days and is currently sitting comfortably at the top of the trending charts.
